Is Mukul Roy Singing The Saffron Anthem?
As the senior Trinamool leader Mukul Roy is suspended from the party for six years on charges of breaking away from the party base and growing closer to the BJP, rumor mills are on about the possibility of the estranged TMC leader holding talks with the BJP top brass on this issue.
To add more power to the story, the suspended Trinamool leader was seen with the BJP in-charge West Bengal and General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya outside a residence in New Delhi.
Looking at the prolific political career of Roy and his enormous contribution to the emergence of Trinamool Congress as a national party, it’s an inevitable fact that he’ll be an asset for any party he joins.
The meeting with Vijayvargiya which comes on the verge of Roy’s resignation as a Rajya Sabha member on Wednesday has drawn more attention to his plausible stance of joining the saffron brigade or bring his now defunct National Trinamool Congress party back into the picture. Mukul Roy, however, denied any such rumors of his commitment to BJP.
As the news of Roy’s closeness to BJP gains, momentum speculations are also rife on Roy replacing Dilip Ghosh as West Bengal BJP President. However current state President for BJP Dilip Ghosh has very high regards for Roy, giving him a clean chit in the Narada and Sharada case investigations and lauded him for his efforts in boosting the TMC’s image.
“Nobody has seen Roy taking money in the video footage of Narada sting operation,” Ghosh argued in favor of the suspended Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP. In a similar wave, Roy also appreciates Ghosh’s aggressive stance in fighting the TMC administration.
In a conversation with the reporters, Roy alleged that the Mamata Banerjee government is restraining his efforts to disburse the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme. He even approved of BJP as a secular party and questioned how the TMC can refer to BJP as communal when it was also the part of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee led NDA government?
Meanwhile, BJP national General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya refrained from making any comments on Roy’s BJP membership prospects.
“All those political leaders who want West Bengal to grow would like to join BJP and work under Prime Minister Narendra Modi as there is no other party which wants to work on the agenda of development,” the BJP general secretary said.
Lots of predictions and assumptions are being thrown over Roy’s allegiance to BJP especially on the position which the senior Trinamool leader will be offered in case he joins hands with BJP. Some insiders even speculate Roy getting the status of BJP national secretary. However upon induction in BJP, Roy’s main task would be to be to form booth committees and get maximum results in the 2018 Panchayat polls. BJP is going to fully mobilize Roy’s sharp election machinery skills to conduct elections and gain political mileage in Bengal. Names of few Mukul Roy loyalists waiting to shift sides have already been surfaced by the BJP cadre. One such name which cropped up in the BJP circles is the current Transport Minister in the TMC government Subhendu Adhikary, whom both state President Dilip Ghosh and Mukul Roy sung laurels of.
However BJP national secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya dismissed any concrete talks on Roy’s proposition of joining BJP and said it’s the party’s prerogative to decide whom to induct and when. “The saffron party is like river Ganga where various small rivers meet”, maintained a top BJP leader on condition of anonymity.
