Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind:NDA’s Candidate:Presidential Election

 

In a surprise turn of events, the Bharatiya Janata Party proposed the name of Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind as the NDA candidate for the upcoming Presidential election.

Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind is the NDA’s nominee for upcoming presidential elections, says BJP chief Amit Shah. He is candidate for presidential election of 2017.

Briefing the press after the BJP parliamentary board meeting, Amit Shah said:  “Ram Nath Kovind has always fought for the betterment of the Dalits and other backward castes.”

The decision was taken after a BJP Parliamentary Board meeting earlier in the day. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, and other political leaders on the issue,” Mr. Shah said. “Mr. Kovind will file nomination on June 23. We have simply informed other leaders,” said Mr. Shah. “I am hoping for consensus on Mr. Kovind’s candidature,” Mr.Shah said.

The Opposition will be meeting on June 22 to decide whether to name a candidate or support the NDA.

Meanwhile, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti, who is at loggerheads with the BJP in Telangana, declared that they would back the NDA candidate.

Ram Nath Kovind, born on 1 October 1945, Village Paraunkh,Tehsil Derapur District  Kanpur Dehat, Uttar Pradesh,is a current  Governor of Bihar. Kovind is a politician from the Bharatiya Janata Party -BJP.

He is a former President of the  BJP Dalit Morcha (1998-2002) and President of the All-India Koli Samaj. He also served as national spokesperson of the party. On 8 August 2015 the President of India appointed him the Governor of Bihar

Shri Ram Nath Kovind is married to Smt. Savita Kovind on 30th May, 1974. He has a son Shri Prashant Kumar who is married and a daughter Miss Swati.

Shri Ram Nath Kovind was elected and became as Rajya Sabha MP in April 1994 from Uttar Pradesh and served for two consecutive terms for 12 years till March, 2006.

  • Parliamentary Committee on Welfare of Scheduled Castes/Tribes.

  • Parliamentary Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment.
  • Parliamentary Committee on Law and Justice.
  • Chairman of Rajya Sabha House Committee.

Shri Ram Nath Kovind, is an advocate by profession and practices in Delhi. He was Central Government Advocate in Delhi High Court from 1977 to 1979 and Central Government Standing Counsel in Supreme Court from 1980 to 1993.

Shri Ram Nath Kovind became Advocate-on-Record of the Supreme Court of India in 1978. Had practiced in Delhi High Court and Supreme Court for about 16 years till 1993. He was enrolled as an Advocate in 1971 with the Bar Council of Delhi.

BJP lawmakers were called to the national capital to act as signatories for the nomination papers. A total of 50 nominators and 50 seconder’s are required to back a candidate eligible to stand in the election.

The election hinges on the Opposition’s decision to field their own candidate, if they fail to arrive at a consensus with the ruling BJP. However, the BJP has the numbers to see its candidate through the election.

Voting for the Presidential election scheduled on July 17, while the counting will take place on July 20, four days before Pranab Mukherjee’s term ends.
