After Crushing Sri Lanka in their own den, Kohli and co will take on the Aussies in a 5 match ODI series. The first of this 5 match series will be played at MA. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday 17th September 2017.
Skipper Kohli will look to continue his winning streak after the successful tour of Sri Lanka. Against Australia, it will be the first time that he will captain his side at home.
Kohli and co defeated the Australians in the 4 match test series earlier this year. Steve Smith’s boys won the 1st test match at Pune, but thereafter it was only India who dominated the game and won the 4 match series 2-1.
Australia hasn’t played any ODIs after their debacle from the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 in England and Wales. The last One-Day International match that they played was against England in Birmingham, which they lost by 40 runs and this also allowed Bangladesh to qualify for the semi-final spot first time in the Champions Trophy’s competition.
Even though Indian team is in good nick they can’t take the Aussies lightly. To make a stronghold over this series, India should make a good and positive start to the series on Sunday.
In absence of Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul should open with Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane should bat at number 4 position. This will make the batting lineup more deep and stronger.
The middle order looks in form, Skipper Kohli had a good run against Sri Lanka and so as MS Dhoni. MSD played some vital knocks under crunch situations. This should get MSD going in this series.
Manish Pandey is another positive that India takes from the ODI series against Sri Lanka. Manish made the use of the opportunity which he got in place of Kedar Jhadav in the 4th ODI at Pallekele.
With Hardik Pandya can play the role of a finisher at the end, this batting line-up looks stronger for the home team.
On the other hand, Steve Smith will look gather momentum after the drawn test series in Bangladesh. Australia lost the first test in a humiliating fashion, but they were back in their business after crushing the Bangla Tigers at their home in the 2nd test to level the series.
Australia should put their disgraceful performance in the Champions Trophy behind. Smith and his men should have to start the tour on high by winning the 1st ODI on Sunday.
The Aussies started their tour with an impressive 103 run victory over the Board President’s XI. Fifties from David Warner, Steve Smith and Marcus Stonis powered Australia to post 347 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their 50 overs.
Ashton Agar’s 4 wickets, Kane Richardson’s 2 wickets and James Faulkner, Marcus Stonis and Adam Zampa’s 1 wicket each gave Australia an impressive of 103 runs. This should get their confidence going for the rest of the series.
Australia spin woes came in the way in the test series in India and also in Bangladesh. The Aussies should be mindful of Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav. These 3 spinners now are the permanent members of the ODI team after Ashwin and Jadeja’s woeful performance in the ICC Champions Trophy against Pakistan.
Australia has a great batting line up and they are experienced in these Indian conditions, they can also play the spinners well, (all thanks to the IPL for its contribution). So the Indian bowlers can’t take them lightly.
But the Indian batsmen should careful of Pat Cummins. This Aussie bowler is full with pace and speed, in absence of Mitchell Starc, Cummins will be the go-to man for Steve Smith.
India also cannot forget his contribution to the test series. Pat Cummins was fully charged up for that contest.
Contributions from Warner and Smith will hold the key for the visitors. Australia will need all-around skills from James Faulkner too and they will rely on Adam Zampa’s spin in the middle overs.
If these things work well for Australia, then there is no chance of India to win this game and possibly the series.
India needs to strick early with the new ball, that’s why the inclusion of Mohd Shami is the key. Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar will do the damage with the new ball and in depth overs Jasprit Bumrah will finish things off in style.
Australia has good bowlers but they are inexperienced, Apart from Pat Cumins, Nathan Coulter Nile, James Faulkner and Adam Zampa no one has that experience to counter the Indian batting unit.
It looks like India have all the bases cover for this 1st One Day International match on Sunday.
