West Indies are the only team in the world to win the World T20 twice. For them it feels like home when they play this shortest format. On Sunday the World Champions proved it yet again and showed that they are the boss of this format.
Just like the ODI series West Indies won the toss in the one off T20 match too. This time the hosts chose to bowl first on a flat pitch which assisted the batsmen more.
India went with couple of changes in the squad and so as West Indies. India dropped Ajinkya Rahane, Hardik Pandya and Yuvraj Singh in their playing XI and Kuldeep Yadav made his T20 debut for India.
West Indies included Carlos Brathwaite, Marlon Samuels, Sunil Narnie and Samuel Badree.
Batting first India started off very nicely; their new opening combination was aggressive. Indian openers scored their highest runs in their first 2 overs.
Skipper Virat Kohli and his new opening partnership Shikhar Dhawan scored the most of loose balls bowled by the West Indies.
India reached the 50 run mark in style. But Virat gave his wicket away to Williams for 39 runs when he was looking to accelerate the scoring.
2 balls after Kohli’s dismissal India slipped further down. A misunderstanding between Rishab Pant and Shikhar Dhawan gave West Indies a chance of making a good comeback.
Dhawan who was looking dangerous was run out for 22 runs.
Then it was a partnership that brought India on track. Rishab Pant and comeback man Dinesh Karthik brought the Indian innings back on track. Karthik started off slowly but some good range of shots allowed him to get through this period.
His partner Rishab Pant was struggling at the other end. Pant couldn’t time the ball well as Karthik. His contribution however was useful for India in the end.
Karthik and Pant 86 run partnership took India above 150 mark. Karthik batted well and he was well set to score his maiden 50 in T20 cricket. Unfortunately he was clean bowled on 48 by Marlon Samuels.
Then the collapse happened, that placed a brake on the Indian momentum and eventually they were short of 15 to 20 runs of their intended total score. After Karthik’s dismissal Dhoni was also dismissed very soon. MS could score only 2 runs.
Pant too couldn’t carry the innings along. His long struggle was over when he edged the ball to the wicket keeper Chadwick Walton of Jerome Taylor’s bowling.
Kedar Jhadav was making a comeback into the T20 side but he again disappointed everyone when he got out for just 4 runs.
It was India’s spin duos who helped India to get a decent total. Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin batted through those last few overs.
They both managed to hit some lusty blows and helped India to set a target of 191 in their 20 overs.
Jadeja was not out on 13 and Ashwin was not on 11.
West Indies made a good comeback. They did very well to restrict India to 190. Jerome Taylor and Kesrick Williams took two wickets each. Marlon Samuels took 1 wicket to his name.
Chasing the target of 191, West Indies too got of a flying start. Universe Boss Chris Gayle and his partner Evin Lewis took on the Indian bowling attack just like the Indian openers.
Gayle and Lewis added 82 runs in 8.2 overs. This partnership was broken when Chris Gayle was out on 18 runs. Debutant Kuldeep Yadav gave India this vital breakthrough.
This was not enough for India to win the game; Marlon Samuels and Evin Lewis took the charge and destroyed the Indian bowling attack.
Lewis scored his 2nd T20 hundred and guided his team through to an amazing win over India.
Evin Lewis 125 not out is the highest runs made while chasing. He broke this and many more records in this brilliant knock. Lewis was supported well by Marlon Samuels. Samuels was unbeaten on 36 runs.
Only 1 wicket fell in that West Indian innings. Kuldeep Yadav was the only Indian bowler to pick up that lone wicket.
West Indies won the match by 9 wickets.
Evin Lewis was the man of the match for his top knock of 125 not out.
Next series – India tour of Sri Lanka from 26th July 2017.
