After being 21 runs short at Bengaluru, Team India registered a famous win at Nagpur yesterday. The 5th and the final ODI of the series was played at VCA Stadium in Jamta at Nagpur.
India won the match by 7 wickets and won the series 4-1, by doing so India is the number 1 team in the ICC ODI Rankings.
India lost their 3rd toss in a row and again they were asked to field first like the last two matches.
The Aussies again chose to bat first, with Warner and Finch in excellent form. They wanted to repeat the batting heroics as they did in Bengaluru.
India dropped Shami and Umesh Yadav and the hosts brought their star bowlers back in their squad. Bhuvi, Kuldeep, and Bumrah were back after their rest for one game.
Australia rested Kane Richardson and picked up James Faulkner. Richardson was unwell that’s why he was dropped from the playing XI.
Warner and Finch, the destructive Aussie openers continued their blazing form in this last match.
The duo started off cautiously in front of the Indian quicks. But once they were set, they fired the Indian pacers just like Bengaluru.
Indian new ball bowlers were taken to the cleaners after some quiet overs.
The Aussie opener added 66 for the first wicket and it looked like Warner and Finch would repeat their class batting like Bengaluru.
Virat was again under pressure, Bumrah and Bhuvi went for plenty just like Umesh and Shami.
And then Hardik Pandya was given the ball and the rest was history. The all-rounder gave India the vital wicket of dangerous Aaron Finch. Finch was looking good before he was caught by Bumrah for 32 runs.
This caused the downfall for the Australians, after Finch, skipper Steve Smith too did not last for long as he was expected to. Smithy could score only 16 before he was caught plumb in front by India’s best middle order bowler Kedar Jhadav.
In the meantime, Warner reached another half-century in International cricket. Unfortunately, he too was out after scoring 53 runs. Axar Patel was the man to pick up the wicket of destructive David Warner.
Peter Handscomb batted well in Bengaluru but he failed yet again when the team needed him to deliver. Axar Patel was the man again to dismiss Handscomb for just 13 runs.
Australia were in deep trouble, after having a decent start their wickets fell like a pack of cards. This was largely because of some great Indian bowling.
Travis Head and Marcus Stoinis tried to repair the Australian innings with a gusty partnership, their partnership of 87 runs almost brought the Australians innings back on track.
But Axar Patel broke this partnership when Travis Head was clean bowled for 42 runs.
Australia slipped down further when Marcus Stoinis was out to Bumrah for 46 runs.
The visitors again were in dire position, they needed someone to stay till the 50 overs. But none of them responded to this tricky situation.
Matthew Wade again disappointed by scoring just 20 and James Faulkner didn’t make good use of his chance. He ran himself out after scoring just 12 runs.
Nathan Coulter Nile was also cleaned up by Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a duck and Australia’s innings was ended on just 242 for the loss of 9 wickets. Pat Cumins was the only batsman to be not out on just 2 runs.
It was a disciplined bowling effort from Team India, they were able to restrict the Australian batsmen after having a good start.
Axar Patel who failed to pick up any wickets in Bengaluru was the pick of the bowlers for his team. He picked up 3 wickets and gave just 38 runs from his full quota of 10 overs.
Bumrah picked up 2 wickets and Hardik, Kedar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up 1 wicket each.
While chasing the modest target of 243 to win, the Indian openers continued their good form at the top.
Rohit and Rahane shared another 100 run partnership, this 100 run stand was the 8th stand in this year which is most by any team in 2017.
Ajinkya Rahane was again amazing like he always is, he scored his 4th fifty on a trot. He became just an 8th India opener to hit 4 successive fifties and only player after Sachin Tendulkar to do it more than once.
Rohit Sharma too continued his blazing hitting form at the other end, he is a treat to watch when he is on the song. Hit Man became the only India player to score a ton in this series.
On his way to a brilliant knock, Rohit also went pass his milestone of 6,000 ODI runs. He took fewest innings to reach this milestone and he is only behind former Indian skipper Saurav Ganguly and current Indian captain Virat Kohli. They took less number of innings to reach this personal milestone.
Rohit and Rahane added 124 for the first wicket, things were looking very dismal for the Australians. When things were looking bleak, Nathan Coulter Nile gave a ray of hope to the world champs.
Coulter Nile dismissed Rahane for his well made 61 runs, then Skipper Kohli joined in to support Hit Man.
Both started off well, there was no misunderstanding or miss communication between the Indian captain and the vice-captain this time around.
Their 99 run partnership took the game away from the visitors. During his innings, Rohit scored his 14th ODI ton. He has scored 6 hundred against Australia, which is the 2nd most. Sachin Tendulkar scored more hundreds, he had scored 9 against the Aussies.
Rohit Sharma was eventually out after scoring a marathon 125 runs, which is also the 2nd highest score at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur. 156 by George Bailey is the highest score at this stadium.
After Rohit’s dismissal, Virat too didn’t last long, he was not there to see India through. He was out for 39 runs. Adam Zampa picked the wickets of Virat and Rohit Sharma.
But Kedar Jhadav and Manish Pandey saw India through this time around, retribution for what they couldn’t do it in Bengaluru.
It was a toil for the Australian bowlers, they were not up to the mark in this whole series. Apart from Bengaluru, the Australian line up looked really weak.
In this match too only Adam Zampa took 2 wickets and Nathan Coulter Nile picked 1 wicket.
India won the match by 7 wickets and win the series 4-1.
This is India’s 3rd win against Australia at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur. They won it in 2009, 2013 and 2017.
India is the now number 1 team in the ICC ODI rankings!
Man of the match was awarded to Rohit Sharma for his knock of 125 runs.
Man of the series was awarded to Hardik Pandya for his all-round performance. Hardik was the highest run-getter and the wicket taker for India in this series.
Next Match is the 1st T20 International match on 7th October 2017 at Ranchi JSCA International Stadium Complex.
