It was a sloppy effort from India to defend their Champions Trophy title.
India were good in their group matches and the semi finals against Bangladesh but their poor show against arch rivals Pakistan denied them a 3rd champions trophy title.
If India would have won this final match India would have been the first team ever to win 3 Champions Trophy title. Currently India and Australia hold 2 titles each.
In the final match of this ICC event, India won the toss and opted to bowl first. For 1st time in the tournament Pakistan batted first.
Pakistani openers were in good form after their opening game loss to India.
Fakhar Zaman and Azhar Ali’s partnership was improving game by game for Pakistan.
In this final match Zaman got lucky in the 3rd over, when he was batting on just 3 runs Zaman was caught behind. India thought they had a quick breakthrough unfortunately that was not the case because Bumrah clearly over stepped the line. It was a no ball that hurt India badly.
Fakhar Zaman cashed in this opporunity to score big runs. He and Ali went to bulid a huge opening partnership.
This was a costly miss from Jasprit Bumrah. He gave another chance to Fakhar Zaman. This was the turning point in that match.
Pakistani openers shared a opening stand of 128 runs in the final. The opening batsmen played with a good intent. They didn’t allow the Indian bowlers to settle.
Azhar Ali scored his second fifty on the trot and Zaman scored his 3rd fifty in just 4 innings.
This 128 run stand was broken due to mis communication between the 2 openers. Azhar Ali ran for the single but Zaman didnt respond him. Jasprit Bumrah’s good throw allowed Dhoni to affect a simple run out. Azhar Ali was ran out for 59 runs.
Babar Azam too cashed in this opportunity. He kept on the pressure that Azhar Ali and Fakhar Zaman put on the Indian bowlers.
Fakhar Zaman and babar Azam samshed bowlers like Ashwin, Jadeja all over the park. He brought his maiden hundred in style. Zaman missed two chances of scoring a century but thanks to the no ball wicket from Bumrah, that allowed him to score his 1st century in ODI cricket.
Zaman continued his explosive batting after reaching his hundred, till Hardik Pandya got him out for his brilliant 114 runs.
Babar continued his class even though Zaman was out he was not in pressure. He continued to hit lovely fours and sixes.
But senior players of Pakistan failed again. Shoaib Malik was promoted up the order to gain his confidence but brilliance of Bhuvneshwar Kumar didnt allow him to score big runs. Malik was out for just 12.
It was a bad day for Kohli. His main bowlers went for runs without picking up the wickets. The introduction of Kedar Jhadav was also too late, normally Kohli is a good reader of the game because of pressure that Pakistani batsmen had put on India, he couldn’t think out of the box.
Even though Kedar Jhadav was brought in the 40th over, he didnt disappoint his captain. like the semi final against Bangladesh, Jhadav picked up wickets here too. Kedar picked up Babar Azam for 46
Then the solid finish from Mohd Hafeez and Imad Wassim allowed Pakistan to post a total of 338 in their 50 overs.
Mohd Hafeez played an amazing innings of 57 not out and Imad Wassim lusty blows helped to get more then they expected. Wassim was also unbeaten on 25 runs.
Poor bowling form India in this final match. Only Bhuneshwar Kumar and Hardik Pandya were the economical bowlers for them. Bowlers like Ashwin, Jadeja and Bumrah struggled to get wickets on this flat pitch.
Bumrah was the one who bowled most extras in that innings. Out of 25 extras Bumrah lone contribution was 8.
India had a stiff target to chase, out in front of the pumped Pakistani bowlers.
Pakistan bowlers were in great form. Even though Mohd Amir missed the last semi final game against England he was the one who troubled the Indian batsmen.
It was a great start for Pakistan and disaster for India. Mohd Amir Picked up Rohit Sharma for a golden duck.
Then in his next over Amir picked up Kohli twice, once he was dropped by Azhar Ali. In the next ball Kohli’s leading edge gave a simple catch to Shadab Khan. Kohli was out for 5.
Shikhar Dhawan was looking good, he hit a few lovely fours of Junaid Khan. But it was Amir again who got him for 21 runs.
Yuvraj Singh was playing his 7th final in the ICC event. Something spectacular was needed from the south paw. It was Shadab Khan’s delivery who picked him for 22.
In the next over the worlds best finisher was also dismissed by Hasan Ali. MS Dhoni’s horrible pull shot gave Hasan Ali one more wicket in this Champions Trophy. MS was out for only 4 runs.
Kedar Jhadav was star with the bowl but couldn’t repeat his heroics as he did in Pune against England. He was out for just 9 runs.
Only Hardik Pandya’s 76 was the positive sign in that Indian innings. Pandya played a good knock and scored his 2nd fifty of his ODI career.
But his miscommunication with Ravindra Jadeja allowed Pandya to lose his wicket for 76 runs.
Ravindra Jadeja and Ashwin also didnt bat well and Jasprit Bumrah was the last man to dismiss for just 1 run.
India was bowled out for just 158 in 30.3 overs. Pakistan comfortably wins this match by 180 runs.
Pakistan won the Champions Trophy title for the first time. They also join India, Sri Lanka and West Indies for winning 3 ICC titles.
Man of the mach – Fakhar Zaman for his brilliant show of 114 runs.
Man of the tournament – Hasan Ali for picking up the 13 wickets. The most by any player in this edition. Hasan Ali also is the first bowler to take 4 successive three wicket hauls in Champions Trophy.
Golden Bat was awarded to Shikhar Dhawan for scoring more runs.
