Summer is here and we can feel the heat blow our energies away. Sitting at your office, sipping lemonade the whole day and cursing the geography you are in will just add up to the frustration. As you plan a holiday to a cool and refreshing place somewhere in the mountains, we have just the right thing for you to put on your to-do list this summer. Go trekking!

Himalayan trails are the most daunting and sought after trekking routes in India. Since the winter months keep these trails snow-covered, summer is the best time to experience the thrill of trekking in the beautiful mountains of the Himalayan range. Here are some of the trekking trails in the Himalayas you must tread on at least once in a lifetime if you are a true adventure enthusiast.

  • Kheerganga Trek

Duration: 3 to 4 hours

Kheerganga is located in the Parvati Valley of Himachal Pradesh. It is a small trek of about 11kms. At the end of the trail you will find a beautiful waterfall with camping facilities around it. There  are a lot of art cafes at Kheerganga where you can meet fellow trekkers to have good food and share interesting stories with.

  • Gomukh-Tapovan Trek

Duration: 12 days

A moderate level trek, Gomukh-Tapovan trek is undertaken from May till October. The trek runs along Bhagirathi river up to the point of its origin which is right below the Gangotri glacier. A further steep trek will lead you to the meadows of Tapovan where you can camp in the lap of high mountains of the Gharwal region. If you are lucky enough, you may also get to see the rare blue mountain goat.

  • Lord Curzon’s Trail

Duration: 10 days

Lord Curzon’s Trail, also known as the Kuari pass trek, is one of the most famous trekking trails of Uttrakhand. The trek can be taken up from mid-April to June and again from September to November. The trek offers beautiful panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks covering the region  in their might.

  • Markha Valley Trek

Duration: 12 days

An overwhelming trek, the trail of Markha Valley is located in Ladakh. One has to go over the Ganda La and Kongmaru La passes to complete the trek. Mesmerising view of the Karakoram range awaits you when you cross the Kongmaru La. You will also come across the meadows of Kang Yatze on the way. After crossing the River Markha, you will witness small tea stall tents where you can have a splendid and nature-driven stay.

  • Shepherd’s Trek

Duration: 12-13 days

The best time to go on this trek is from September till November. The trek covers high mountainous trails of Kullu and Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh with a moderate level of difficulty. The final stop of the trek is at Bara Bengal, which is a Shepherd village. The highest peak of the region, ‘Hanuman Tibba’ or the ‘White Mountain’, is clearly visible from certain points of the trek.

  • Valley of Flowers Trek

Duration: 7 days

Nothing can match the beauty of this valley of Garhwal when it is in full bloom. The ideal time to take up this trek, therefore, is from April till June. One of the tributaries of River Alaknanda, called Pushpavati, flows through this region adding charm to its beauty. You can also trek up to Hemkund after crossing the Valley of Flowers. An important pilgrimage for the Sikhs, Hemkund Sahib will add a spiritual zest to your journey.
