Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot might be appointed as Congress president a party source has told media following a development on Sunday late night.
Rahul Gandhi is still very much adamant on his decision, he does not want to continue as Congress President after 17th Lok Sabha election debacle while the grand old party has bagged only 52 seats.
Rahul decision made leadership crisis in the party and no veteran leader closed to Gandhi family are willing to take the charge.
Besides his responsibility as Chief Minister of Rajasthan, he will serve the top post of the party because a large chunk of Congress leaders are in favour of Gehlot’s elevation as the party chief, a source from Congress’s Delhi unit said this to media.
The source added that the Gandhi family also favours Ashok Gehlot’s elevation as party president.
If Gehlot’s elevation is confirmed then he will be enlisted with West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Odisha’s Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister late J Jayalalitha, who managed both the party and state as chief.
Meanwhile tough times and tussle are on within the Congress over who will be the next party president after Rahul, who is currently the chief. Gandhi scion had offered his resignation after the Lok Sabha results were announced last month. Rahul had taken responsibility for the party’s debacle in the election and despite the party urging him to continue on the post, he has remained firm that he wants to step down from his position.
