In a significant step, the Government of India may not let its water to flow through Pakistan, Union Road Transport and Highways and Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari has indicated.
India is likely to use water flowing to Pakistan to nurture river Yamuna, he said.
While speaking at an event on Wednesday in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat city, Gadkari said many big ticket projects have been launched for cleaning up and rejuvenation of river Yamuna. Now, the government is also looking to use water flowing to Pakistan from the three rivers to nurture Yamuna.
“We have started the work of cleansing up of Yamuna. As water resource minister, I can tell you, the three rivers whose water goes to Pakistan, now projects will be started there to divert the water to Yamuna,” Gadkari said.
The move holds significance as it comes just days after the Pulwama terror attack by Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad’ terrorist in Jammu and Kashmir which left 42 people killed on February 14.
