Controversy over the citizenship of Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar is showing no sign of slowing down. He has been constantly trolled on social media for his Canadian citizenship especially since he could not cast his vote in Mumbai during the fourth phase of Lok Sabha elections.
Akshay who claimed that he never denied holding a Canadian passport was recently questioned for winning Best Actor Award at the 64th National Film Awards for 2016 released ‘Rustam’.
Screenplay writer Apurva Asrani whose Manoj Bajpayee starrer ‘Aligarh’ could not win the award the same year, slammed Akshay Kumar. Apurva stated, “Are Canadian citizens eligible for India’s National Awards? The year (2016) Akshay Kumar won Best Actor, we were expecting Manoj Bajpayee to win for Aligarh. If the jury/minister has made an error in Kumar’s, will there be a re-vote?”
Amidst these controversies Akshay received support from his Bollywood colleague Anupam Kher.
Referring to Akshay’s statement explaining his position on the controversy, Kher urged him to stop explaining his loyalty to the country. He took to his Twitter and wrote, “Dear Akshay Kumar! Have been reading about you explaining to certain people about your loyalty to our country. Stop it! Their real profession is to make people like you and me feel defensive for talking in favor of India. You are a doer. You don’t need to explain to anybody,”
