On the third day of the anti-terror operation in Kupwara and days after four security personnel died in Kupwara, two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, two state policemen and a civilian were killed in an encounter in Handwara today. The encounter started after security forces targeted a residential house where terrorists were hiding, said the police.
Police sources say that during the night the firing and search operations have been stopped. But there is no clarity about how many terrorists have been killed or still hiding in the building.
The anti-terror operations in Kupwara began on Friday when two terrorists who were hiding in the same area have been killed. There was a break in firing several times but terrorists started firing as soon as the security forces advanced towards the house where they were hiding, officials said.
A terrorist, who was presumed dead, emerged from the rubble of a destroyed house and started firing which took the security personnel by surprise.
Army chief, General Bipin Rawat on Saturday reviewed the security situation along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB) in Jammu region. He was also given an update about the measures in hinterland in the Corps’ area of responsibility towards ensuring peace and stability.
