India witnesses the commencement of parliamentary elections today, following days of high-pitch oratory of several party leaders across the country. Thursday witnesses the first phase of seven-phased elections for the Lok Sabha.
These seven-phase elections will culminate grueling political battle: 91 seats across 18 states and two Union territories are voting on Thursday. The last phase of elections will be held on May 19. The counting of votes will be held on May 23.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stressed ahead of the first phase of elections how the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government influenced and boost the development, economic growth, welfare measure and national security.
At the forefront of the opposition is Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who has made his efforts to form a grand alliance of opposition parties disgruntled by BJP government’s efforts to deliver its style of governance, especially focusing on issues like Triple Talaq for Muslim women and Citizenship Bill or the most recent scoring major diplomatic wins internationally following air strikes on Pakistan soil.
