After playing Saadat Hasan Manto in Nandita Das’s ‘Manto’, Nawazuddin Siddiqui is back again to woo his fans with the much talked about biopic on Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray.
The much awaited trailer of his upcoming venture ‘Thackeray’ launched on Wednesday, 26 December with the full cast and crew members of the film and in the presence of Thackeray’s son and present Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray, his family and other leaders of the party. Within a few hours of release, the trailer instantly managed to find place in the trending list!
Siddiqui essayed the role of Shiv Sena patriarch Bal Keshav Thackeray.
On Wednesday, the actor took to his Twitter and summed up the film’s essence in his post, sharing the trailer: “Unfolding the real story of Balasaheb Thackeray’s courage, wisdom and indomitable truth. The tiger who was known for fearing none!”
The almost-three-minute trailer is a powerful portrayal of Thackeray’s rise to power from an illustrator to one of the most influential political leaders of Maharashtra.
The drama broadly encompassed Thackeray’s large political influence in Maharashtra, especially in Mumbai and covers issues including influence of non-marathi people in Mumbai, his Hindutva stance, discontinuing cricketing ties between India and Pakistan due to terrorist attacks, Shiv Sena followers being part of the violence against Muslims during 1992-93 Mumbai riots and issues like Ram Mandir-Babri Masjid.
The trailer opened with nineties’ communal riots in Mumbai when the narrator says, “Iss waqt Bombay ko ek hi aadmi shaant kar sakta hai.” And thus the trailer introduces Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Balasaheb Thackeray, who founded his own political party, Shiv Sena in 1966 for the interests of the Marathis not only in the political sphere but also in economic scenario of Bombay.
Nawaz will surely steal the show with his power packed performance as the iconic leader. And we are sure about him that once again he will definitely win cine-lovers heart with his most massy film in the year.
Apart from Nawazuddin, ‘Thackeray’ also stars Amrita Rao as Meenatai Thackeray, wife of the Maharashtra’s tallest leader.
‘Thackeray’ is scheduled to hit the screen on January 25, 2019, on the 93rd birth anniversary of Balasaheb. The biographical drama is helmed by Abhijit Panse and Shiv Sena lawmaker Sanjay Raut co-produced the film along with Viacom18 Motion Pictures and Carnival Motion Pictures.
Talking about the film, co-producer Raut revealed that Nawaz was his first choice for Balasaheb’s role and he never discussed it with anyone. When Nawaz was offered the role, he got surprised for a while but within three minutes, he agreed to be part of the film.
‘Thackeray’ will release in Hindi and Marathi.
