Ahead of the upcoming 2019 General Elections, Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s sister Priyanka Gandhi officially joined the party on Wednesday. She was AICC’s appointed General Secretary for Eastern Uttar Pradesh.
The Gandhi family has long been blamed by rival Bharatiya Janata Party for promoting dynasty in the Indian politics for decades.
The 47-year-old Priyanka is the last one in the fourth generation of Nehru-Gandhi family, after her brother Rahul Gandhi and cousin Varun Gandhi, to step into the political arena. Many in the Congress party had wanted Priyanka to join politics and her entry could boost the morale of the party workers.
During 2004 General Elections, she was her mother’s campaign manager and helped supervise her brother Rahul Gandhi’s campaign
Priyanka, who also serves as Trustee of Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, is the daughter of Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, and granddaughter of Feroze and Indira Gandhi, making her a member of the wider Nehru-Gandhi family.
Priyanka has been one of the top advisors of Rahul and Congress Chairperson Sonia Gandhi for a long time in recent years. Her entry was much expected for years but it was somehow strategically delayed till her brother was anointed as the Congress president last year.
In Eastern UP, she has been given a tough front to hold as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency Varanasi falls in this region.
Welcoming his sister’s official entry, Congress President Rahul Gandhi said the BJP was worried she had joined politics ahead of the general elections. “I am happy my sister will work with me.” She will take charge during the first week of February 2019.
Meanwhile, BJP ‘welcomed’ the new entrant of the Gandhi family in its own way by equaling her with a “crutch” for Rahul Gandhi.
Appointing his sister Priyanka Gandhi in-charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh ahead of the Lok Sabha polls shows the “failure” of Congress President Rahul Gandhi, the BJP stated.
“As the Congress is not being accepted as part of ‘mahagatbandhan’ in states, a crutch is being searched in the family. Priyanka, who is from his (Rahul’s) family, is like a crutch for him,” BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said.
This, Patra said, was the basic difference between the BJP and the Congress.
“Party is the family for the BJP whereas family is the party for Congress. All selections are done in only one family. Somewhere Rahul has failed… Who will be the next after Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi? Only one family! The new India is asking this question.”
