Actor-turned-politician Sunny Deol, who won the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat on a BJP ticket, may be pulled up by the Election Commission for overspending during election campaigning.
The Gurdaspur MP has been asked to explain his poll expenditure during general elections after it was found to have crossed the statutory limit of Rs 70 lakh, revealed an official. EC sent notice to the actor.
The notice to Deol to reconcile his poll expenditure account was issued by Gurdaspur District Election Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner Vipul Ujjwal. Ujjwal said in a statement that Sunny’s poll expenditure was found to be more than Rs 70 lakh limit. He has apparently spent Rs 86 lakh in campaigning for his election debut.
The poll watchdog has received complaints about Sunny exceeding the expenditure from several sources. According to the EC, crossing the expenses limits may invite strict action against such MPs. In fact, EC holds that rights to suspend such a candidate’s membership of the Parliament for overspending and declare the runner-up candidate as the winner.
