Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s mortal remains were consigned to flames on Monday evening at Goa’s Miramar beach. Thousands of people congregated to bid him adieu.
The last rites of the 63-year-old leader, who breathed his last on Sunday after a long battle with cancer, were conducted with full military honours in Goa’s Miramar beach.
A pall of gloom descended upon thousands of mourners who gathered on the occasion.
People from all walks of life bid him last farewell, as Parrikar’s body was consigned to flames at 6 pm amid chants of verses from Hindu religious texts.
Parikkar’s mortal remains were wrapped in tricolour and was accorded a state funeral with full military honours as the crowds raised slogans of Vande Mataram.
Earlier today, Parrikar’s body was brought at BJP headquarters in Panaji from his private residence in Dona Paula for people to pay their last respect to the leader. Later, in a funeral procession his body was carried to Miramar beach for cremation.
Politicians across parties gathered to pay their last homage.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari reached the venue to bid adieu to their former cabinet colleague and defense minister.
The Prime Minister met his family members, including his two sons, and offered his condolences to them.Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani, Governor of Goa Mridula Sinha were among many others who paid their tributes to the departed soul.
Military personnel marched with the Parrikar’s cortege as he had served as the defence minister of the country from 2014-2017. Several serving officers of the armed forces paid their respects to Parrikar at the Miramar beach.
Parrikar, who was often referred to as ‘common man’s CM‘, was being treated at the AIIMS Delhi. His health started deteriorating in February 2018 and he was first admitted at Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital for pancreatic ailment. He was flown to the US in the first week of March last year where he remained admitted at hospital till June.
After fighting a prolonged battle against pancreatic cancer, Parrikar breathed his last on Sunday evening at his Panaji residence.
President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu, and Prime Minister Modi led the nation in condoling the sad demise on Sunday.
