In an unusual development Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav surprised the Lok Sabha members by supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a second inning in the parliament.
The development was witnessed with a pleasant surprise on Wednesday, the last day before the parliament was to be dismissed sine die. It was the last sitting of 16thLok Sabha.
While addressing to the House, the veteran leader and founder of SP said, “I wish that all members come back to the House and I wish that Narendra Modi comes back as Prime Minister.”
The expression of his heartiest desire made a lot of leaders in the opposition look embarrassed while he earned a round of applause from the treasury bench and the Prime Minister acknowledged Mulayam’s wish with folded hands.
It is pertinent to mention that the Samajwadi Party, now led by Mulayam Singh Yadav’s son Akhilesh Yadav, is set to contest elections in alliance with the BSP party against the Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA alliance.
But it looked the son’s political stand did not affect the veteran Samajwadi Leader’s statesmanship beyond political calculations.
After hearing Mulayam’s compliment as Prime Minister making efforts to take everyone along, ruling alliance members heartily cheered Mulayam’s name and chanted ‘Jai Shri Ram’.
Later, Prime Minister Modi also made a mention of Mulayam’s blessings in his speech.
