All-women sailing expedition by three Indian Armed Forces creates history

The world’s first tri-service women’s sailing expedition, “Samudra Pradakshina,” has achieved a significant milestone. The team has achieved historic success by circumnavigating the coast of Sri Lanka and the Equator. According to the Indian Army, each mile sailed symbolizes courage, resilience, and women’s power, spreading the spirit of India across the world’s oceans.

Launched by the Defence Minister on September 11, the expedition represents courage beyond borders, tri-service integration, and a self-reliant India. The expedition team is led by Lieutenant Colonel Anuja Varudkar and Squadron Leader Shraddha P. Raju. The 10-member team comprises Major Karamjeet Kaur, Major Omita Dalvi, Captain Prajakta P. Nikam, Captain Dauli Butola, Lieutenant Commander Priyanka Gusain, Wing Commander Vibha Singh, Squadron Leader Aruvi Jaydev, and Squadron Leader Vaishali Bhandari.

The team underwent three years of intensive training. Training began with short offshore expeditions on Class-B vessels and progressed to the Class-A vessel IASV Triveni in October 2024. Their preparation included a series of challenging voyages along India’s west coast and an international expedition from Mumbai to the Seychelles.

The most challenging leg of the “Samudra Pradakshina” will be the circumnavigation of Cape Horn in the Southern Ocean between December 2025 and February 2026. Large waves, cold winds, and unpredictable weather changes make this a supreme test of seamanship. The crew will handle navigation, maintenance, and other essential tasks, while also working on monitoring systems.

During the expedition, the team will also conduct scientific research in collaboration with the National Institute of Oceanography, including microplastic studies, documentation of marine life and awareness regarding marine environment conservation.

Previously, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston of Britain completed the first solo circumnavigation in 1969. In India, Captain Dilip Donde (Retd) and Commander Abhilash Tomy (Retd) achieved this feat in 2009-10 and 2012-13, respectively. The Indian Navy has previously successfully completed the Navika Sagar Parikrama (2017-18) and Navika Sagar Parikrama-II (2024-25).
