BJP Gearing Up for 2017 Elections; Congress Optimistic On Gujarat

It seems that the BJP is already riding high on its hopes to win the assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. AS per the India Today Axis-My India Opinion Poll the BJP can predict a convincing win against the Congress grabbing the two-thirds majority in the 68 member Himachal Pradesh assembly. In Gujarat also BJP predicts a landslide victory with a target of winning 125 seats in the 182 seats member assembly.

But according to the latest reports doing the rounds, a PAAS leader (Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti) leader Narendra Patel quit the party charging the BJP with of bribing him with Rs 10 lakhs.

In his interview with the media, Narendra Patel said, “I was offered Rs 1 crore to join the Bharatiya Janata Party. I have already been given Rs 10 lakh advance. Varun Patel took me to a meeting where it was discussed that I will be given Rs 1 Cr and received the money from his hands. This Rs 10 lakh is no hard-earned money. This is the result of corruption. I am a shaheed of Mehsana. I will return this money. I don’t want this money. I have joined this movement only for Patidars, not for my political interests,”

The BJP is already in a tussle for its controversy over reservation of Patel community in Gujarat and this recent development has rocked BJP’s boat, in its quest to garner votes from the influential Patidar community. Within moments of this shocking allegation, another Patidar leader Nikhil Sawani also quit BJP on the grounds of being “upset” on the bribe allegations raised against the BJP.

Ironically Sawani had joined BJP just 15 days back with the government promise of reservations for the Hardik Patel led PAAS. Though the Patidar’s are traditionally in favour of BJP, it’s not clear who they would pick this time the Congress or the BJP.

Recently the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti leader Hardik Patel accused the BJP government of “spying” on him based on a CCTV footage of his alleged meeting with Congress leaders. Patel, however, denied the allegations and confirmed that he and Rahul Gandhi checked into the same luxury hotel in Ahmadabad but did not meet him or any other Congress leader at all.

He said that the BJP’s leakage of the CCTV footage is a “direct infringement of my right to privacy.” he further reiterated that “the BJP has deployed the entire Intelligence Bureau to harm me.”

According to sources, the Congress invited three party leaders to join the big palm- OBC leader Alpesh Thakur, Dalit leader Jignesh Mewani and Hardik Patel. While Thakur officially joined Congress during a rally held by Rahul Gandhi, Mewani was absent in the rally. While CCTV footage reveals Patel’s emergence from the hotel, he didn’t show any interest in contesting the polls with Congress representation.

Even AICC general secretary of Gujarat Ashok Gehlot condemned the BJP’s plot to leak the CCTV footage of the hotel and said that “the entire surveillance is being carried out on BJP’s orders which is a serious violation of privacy”.

Hardik Patel launched an acid attack on the saffron brigade calling it a “Mahachor” and Congress a “Chor”. He said that he would fully support Congress in the 2017 assembly elections contest with the BJP, and fight to fulfil the reservation rights for Patidar community.
