British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is currently visiting India. On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi warmly welcomed him at the Raj Bhavan in Mumbai. The two leaders held extensive discussions on renewing bilateral relations and strengthening the strategic partnership.
Prime Minister Modi stated at a joint press conference that under Prime Minister Starmer’s leadership, India-UK relations have gained significant momentum. He recalled that during his visit to the UK in July this year, the two countries had reached an agreement on the historic Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement. Modi said that Prime Minister Starmer’s visit to India within months of that agreement, accompanied by the largest business delegation ever, signals a renewed energy and broad vision in this partnership.
Prime Minister Modi said that in the current environment of international instability, this deepening partnership between India and the UK is becoming a strong foundation for global stability and economic growth. Describing the two countries as “natural partners,” he said that their relationship is rooted in shared values such as democracy, freedom, and the rule of law.
On this occasion, Prime Minister Modi also announced new collaborations in the field of education. He stated that nine prestigious British universities are establishing campuses in India. Of these, the University of Southampton has already opened its campus in Gurugram, and the first batch of students has already enrolled. Modi stated that this step will elevate India-UK relations in the field of education to new heights.
Speaking on security and defense cooperation, Prime Minister Modi announced that a new military training agreement has been signed between the two countries. Under this agreement, Indian Air Force flying instructors will now serve as trainers in the British Royal Air Force. This cooperation will further strengthen professional skills and mutual trust between the two armies.
