The Indian team is gearing up for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Ahead of the Test series, Indian Cricket Team head coach Gautam Gambhir has confirmed that if regular captain Rohit Sharma is unavailable for the first Test against Australia, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will lead the cricket team.
The match is scheduled to begin in Perth on November 22. During a press conference on Monday before departing from Mumbai to Australia, Coach Gambhir said, “Bumrah is the vice-captain; if Rohit is not available, he will captain in Perth.” Rohit Sharma is not with the team at the moment, but he has not been officially ruled out of the first match of the series. Giving an update on Rohit’s situation, Gambhir said, “At the moment, nothing is confirmed, but we will keep you updated on the situation. Hopefully, he will be available, but we will know everything by the start of the series.”
Gambhir’s announcement has highlighted the team’s contingency plans as they prepare to face Australia, with Bumrah ready to take on the leadership role if needed. Following India’s embarrassing defeat at home against New Zealand, the road to the WTC Final has become challenging.
After winning the series 3-0, India will need to win the series 4-0 to secure their place in London for the third consecutive time in the WTC Final. After the first match of the series in Perth, the second Test, which will be played in the day-night format, will be played at the Adelaide Oval from December 6 to 10. After that, fans will be focusing on the Gabba in Brisbane for the third Test, which will be held from December 14 to 18.
