Congress Reclaims Datia By-Election as BJP’s Internal Rift Opens Door for Victory

DATIA: Congress leader Kunwar Ghanshyam Singh secured a hard-fought victory over BJP’s Ashutosh Tiwari in the Datia assembly by-election, exposing the strategic costs of the ruling party’s candidate selection. The decision to pass over former Home Minister Narottam Mishra left local BJP cadres visibly demotivated, creating a void that directly undermined the party’s field campaign and voter turnout.

While the BJP’s internal disconnect played a clear role, Singh’s personal standing was central to the Congress breakthrough. Belonging to the local royal family and holding a clean public record, Singh drew broad support across diverse demographic groups. Congress maintained strong internal unity throughout the campaign, deploying senior leaders to ground-level operations and ensuring efficient voter mobilization.

Mounting local discontent over infrastructure, employment, and civic administration further fueled the shift toward Congress. Datia’s voters used the ballot to voice frustration over unresolved local issues, demonstrating that strong candidates and focused campaign execution can effectively overcome entrenched political machinery.
