Deterring Space Weaponization: India Calls on United Nations for Legally Binding, Comprehensive Treaty

NEW YORK: India took a firm stand at the United Nations to prevent outer space from deteriorating into an active operational battleground. Presenting its formal stance before international delegates, India urged member states to negotiate and implement a comprehensive, legally binding treaty to prohibit the militarization and deployment of weapons in outer space.

The Indian delegation emphasized that space remains the common province of humanity and must be reserved strictly for scientific and peaceful development. With satellite networks underpinning global communication, navigation systems, climate monitoring, and critical public services, an arms race in outer space poses an acute structural threat to civilian infrastructure and long-term space exploration.

India reiterated that a multilateral treaty under the aegis of the United Nations must be non-discriminatory, transparent, and binding on all spacefaring powers alike. Establishing a reliable multilateral consensus was presented as essential to safeguarding space sustainability and ensuring stable access for generations to come.
