Ram Setu, also called Adam’s Bridge, has been a point of controversy, both for the mythologists as well as scientists. And yes, Indian politics is in no way behind to not leave any opportunity to get back at each other, even if it is a matter of science.
What mythology says…
According to Hindu mythology, Ram Setu was built by Lord Ram, about 5,000 years ago. The bridge would connect India with Sri Lanka, making it easier for him to go and fight a war with Ravana who had abducted his wife, Sita. The epic Ramayana states that the Ram Setu was built on the orders of Lord Ram by the army of monkeys led by Lord Hanuman. The stones thrown into the sea had ‘Ram’ written over them which gave these stones the magical power to float on water, thereby creating a bridge from India to Sri Lanka.
What science says…
A science-related channel, Discovery Science (based in the US) has brought out a trailer for one of its shows called ‘What On Earth’ where an episode is dedicated to the scientific aspect of Ram Setu. In the trailer, the scientists claim that recent NASA satellite pictures reveal that Ram Setu is not natural but man-made.
Dr. Alan Leste, a well-known geologist, is shown explaining in the promo as to why he and other scientists believe that Ram Setu is man-made. He says that the stones of the bridge were brought to that place by someone and were not naturally located. Also, the sand over which these stones rest is dated to be 4,000 years old while the stones are dated to be 7,000 years old. The stones have pores in them.
Apart from this, the scientist also referred to Hindu mythology and acknowledged the preciseness of the epic Ramayana.
The episode will reveal this and a lot more about Ram Setu.

10 years ago, Congress-led UPA government had presented an affidavit in the Supreme Court, stating that Valmiki’s Ramayana had no historical or scientific evidence to back its authenticity. BJP had however opposed this proposition. 10 years later, BJP has again raised the matter, seeking an apology from Congress for trying to prove a religious text wrong.
The government affidavit stated, “Valmiki Ramayana and Ramcharitmanas admittedly form an important part of ancient Indian literature, but these cannot be said to be historical records to incontrovertibly prove the existence of the characters and occurrences of events depicted therein.” This argument was primarily put forth by Kapil Sibal.
BJP leader Subramanian Swamy said, “The U.S. scientists have come forward to say what we already knew…I have said this in the Supreme Court itself that three retired directed generals from Geological Survey of India gave a report which was placed in the apex court to show that this is man-made.”
Ram Setu or The Adam’s Bridge stretches for 30 miles and connects Danushkodi in India to Mannar Island in Sri Lanka.
The episode airing the investigations on the artificial nature of the bridge is called ‘Ancient Land Bridge’.
The show is going to fuel the already heated discussion between the two leading parties of India regarding the Ram Setu and its authenticity for being a man-made bridge built by Lord Ram.
