Eight Congress MLAs, including former Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday in what is being considered a major setback for the opposition party. With this, the strength of Congress has come down to three in the 40-member Goa Legislative Assembly.
The BJP retained its power by winning the assembly elections held in March this year. The BJP had 20 MLAs earlier. Now the number of Congress MLAs has come down from 11 to three.
Sawant said that eight Congress MLAs have joined the BJP unconditionally. He said that the BJP now has 28 MLAs and it enjoys the support of 33 MLAs in total in the assembly. Sawant said the “Quit Congress Yatra” has started from Goa.
