The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed Shri Arvind Kejriwal, National Convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party, to submit details of the allegations levelled by him in which he claimed that poison was deliberately mixed in the water of the Yamuna river. The Commission has sought clarification from him as to what type of poison, in what quantity and by what method was it mixed in the river water.
Mr Kejriwal has also been requested to clarify the difference between his allegations of ammonia contamination and claims of poisonous water. He has alleged a planned action to increase the ammonia level in the Yamuna water, which has been taken seriously by the Commission.
The Commission has also advised Mr Kejriwal to refrain from making misleading and provocative statements that may lead to social unrest. It has also stressed that sanitation and availability of water is the primary responsibility of the government and all governments must ensure that citizens get access to safe and clean water.
Finally, the Election Commission has also clarified that availability of clean water is a vital issue of governance and should be addressed by all concerned governments as soon as possible. They will determine this important issue based on proper governance capacity and discretion and will not interfere in matters such as water resource sharing and water pollution during the election period.
