EU leaders have agreed to impose sanctions on most oil imports from Russia by the end of this year. The sanctions are in line with new sanctions imposed on Russia during a meeting to aid Ukraine. Temporary exemption has been allowed on oil imports through pipelines.
The President of the European Union Council, Charles Michel, said that under the agreement, more than two-thirds of oil imports from Russia would be banned. He said the new sanctions required the consent of all 27 member states. It will be legally approved by Wednesday.
Michel said EU leaders also agreed to provide 9 billion euros in aid to Ukraine.
