NEW DELHI: Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that nations across the Global South must evolve beyond merely complying with existing global frameworks and actively shape the rules governing international affairs. Addressing the evolving geopolitical landscape, he emphasized that international structures must become more representative and balanced to accurately reflect the demographic scale and economic weight of developing nations.
He pointed out that international regulations and institutional norms have historically been drafted by a small group of developed economies and imposed globally without sufficient broader consensus. With emerging benchmarks currently being formulated across critical domains such as climate action, multilateral trade, supply chain resilience, and digital governance, excluding the priorities and perspectives of the developing world would leave the emerging international architecture fundamentally inequitable.
The Foreign Secretary affirmed that collective solidarity and unified positioning remain essential for the Global South to safeguard its structural interests. He stressed that developing countries must proactively set policy agendas rather than react to external mandates, ensuring their involvement in multilateral governance transitions into a decisive, rulemaking authority.
