Himachal Pradesh Assembly Election results are here and we can’t stop but ponder over the choice made by the people of Himachal Pradesh. A BJP government without the chosen candidate by the party for the CM seat is what the verdict says. Let’s give this entire scenario a closer look and try to figure out the fate of the hillstate.
With a turnout of 74.61%, Himachal Pradesh witnessed the highest number of voters this time. Out of the total 68, BJP managed to secure 44 while Congress could only hold 21 seats. Independent candidates covered 2 seats and 1 CPM candidate also registered victory. The shift in the government was expected as the state has followed an alternate party pattern from decades. This means that if Congress wins for one term, BJP wins for the second. It was known that BJP would form government. However, the actual shocker was the failure of key candidates to succeed in the elections. This included BJP CM candidate Prem Kumar Dhumal, President Satpal Singh Satti, Gulab Singh Thakur, Ravinder Ravi, and Randhir Singh from the BJP camp and Kaul Singh Thakur, Sudhir Sharma, Thakur Singh Bharmouri and Parkash Chaudhary from the Congress camp.

With BJP CM candidate Prem Kumar Dhumal having lost in his own constituency i.e. Sujanpur, the question of who the next chief minister of Himachal Pradesh will be hovers over the people’s minds. The names of Union Health Minister, Jagat Prakash Nadda, and five time winner from Seraj, Mandi, Jai Ram Thakur have sprung up for the occupancy of the CM seat.
With the 2019 elections coming closer, BJP might not want Nadda to go back to running HP. This will also prove to be a back step for Nadda who has a very important ministry with him at the centre.
Also, since Mandi and Kangra form bigger constituencies where BJP has almost had a clean sweep in winning, it is likely that they would choose the CM from these districts. Highly populated areas, Mandi and Kangra form the majority of voters in Himachal Pradesh. Being a huge vote bank full of politically aware people, BJP will try to steal a leader from these districts for the CM seat.
Jai Ram Thakur, who has had a winning streak in assembly elections, was also a minister under the previous BJP government in the state. People seem to side with him for becoming the next chief minister since he has a strong background for the development of his constituency.
Looking back at the track record of Prem Kumar Dhumal, people don’t seem too happy with his candidature, which was evident when he lost this time. The corrupt regime of the two former CMs, Prem Kumar Dhumal and Virbhadra Singh has led people to demand change. They are now rooting for a new face on the CM seat and Jai Ram Thakur seems the most viable option.
However, almost 21 MLAs are backing Prem Kumar Dhumal’s candidature for the chief minister’s post. It is then a very confusing state for the people of Himachal Pradesh and a decisive position for BJP for a few more days.
Corruption charges loom over both the political camps. Congress lost in the state owing to the corruption charges against its prime leader. When PM Narendra Modi called out Rahul Gandhi and Virbhadra Singh as ‘zamanati neta’, he did not quite analyse the situation of BJP leaders in the state who were also equally responsible for corruption in Himachal Pradesh and had criminal cases against them. Almost 22 leaders have criminal cases against them with 2 having committed serious crimes.
While the discussion is going on in Delhi among ace BJP leaders, people of the state are hopeful and restless at the same time, waiting for the big news to be out in their favour.
