Team India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to the ICU of a Sydney hospital . He suffered a serious rib injury during the third ODI against Australia , resulting in internal bleeding . Iyer’s condition is now stable under medical supervision, although he may have to remain in the hospital for a few more days.
During Saturday’s third ODI, Iyer took a brilliant catch to dismiss Alex Carey . While running back to take the catch, he fell to his left and injured his ribs. He immediately returned to the dressing room in pain and did not return to the field.
According to news agency PTI , a source close to the team said, “Shreyas has been in the ICU for the past few days. Tests revealed internal bleeding due to a rib injury . Considering his condition serious, he was immediately admitted to the hospital. Doctors said he will be kept under observation for at least five to seven days to prevent any infection from the bleeding.”
The BCCI medical team took immediate action after noticing a change in Iyer’s condition. The team doctor and physio took no chances and rushed him straight to the hospital. According to a source, “His condition is stable now, but the case was serious. He is a strong player and is expected to recover soon.”
Shreyas Iyer was initially expected to be out of action for approximately three weeks , but now, due to the severity of his injury, recovery time may be longer . According to doctors, it is difficult to pinpoint an exact return date due to internal bleeding .
The 31-year-old Iyer will have to remain in Sydney for treatment for another week. After that, he will be flown to India if his condition improves. It should be noted that Iyer is not part of the five-match T20 series against Australia .
The team management has said that Iyer’s health is being continuously monitored and a decision on his future schedule will be taken only after he is completely healthy.
