Iran Proves to be a Reliable Friend Again: Record Number of Indian Ships Cross Hormuz; Has the US Trapped India?

Amidst the fierce tensions and flames of war in Western Asia, the depth of the relationship between India and Iran has once again come before the world. As war clouds hover over the ‘Strait of Hormuz’—the world’s most critical maritime route—and Iran’s conflict with the US and Israel reaches its peak, Tehran has designated India as a ‘true and reliable friend’ and decided to grant safe passage to Indian vessels. According to recent reports, during this period of crisis, the largest number of foreign ships passing through the Gulf of Hormuz has belonged to India. This move by Iran has not only ensured India’s energy security but has also sent a message on the international stage that only old friends stand by you during crises.

Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Fatali recently praised India during a press conference in New Delhi. He clarified that the fates of Iran and India are intertwined and that India has played the role of a ‘sympathetic partner’ in this difficult hour. While the US has enforced a strict blockade in the Gulf of Hormuz to pressure Iran, Iran has allowed ships from friendly nations like India, China, and Russia to pass without hindrance. So far, more than eight large Indian LPG and crude oil tankers, including vessels like ‘Shivalik’ and ‘Nanda Devi’, have safely reached Indian ports. This is a huge relief for India as a major portion of the country’s energy needs is met via this route.

However, this entire situation has raised a significant diplomatic question: has the US’s policy trapped India in an unwanted web? The ‘Operation Epic Fury’ launched by the US administration and the subsequent harsh sanctions on Iran have made it difficult for India to maintain a balance. The US has warned that any ship paying toll fees to Iran could face consequences. Consequently, India faces the challenge of meeting its energy needs while also feeling the pressure to protect its strategic ties with the US. Experts believe that this aggressive stance by the US has created instability in global trade corridors, which could increase the economic burden on oil-importing countries like India.

Currently, India is demonstrating its diplomatic prowess by trying to find a middle ground between the two sides. The Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Shipping are constantly monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of Indian sailors and vessels. Iran’s friendly gesture is being viewed as a major diplomatic victory for India, as it has maintained its independent foreign policy to protect its interests while many other nations distance themselves from Iran. It will be interesting to see in the coming times whether the US shows some leniency or if India has to further deepen its relations with countries like Russia and Iran for its energy security.
