Prashant Kishor Crushes BJP Stronghold in Bankipur as RJD Collapses to Third

PATNA: Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor delivered a seismic shock to Bihar’s political landscape by capturing the Bankipur assembly seat in a landmark by-poll victory. Shattering nearly three decades of unbroken BJP dominance, Kishor secured a decisive 19,324-vote margin without relying on traditional caste arithmetic. His campaign, centered squarely on governance, employment, and education, signaled a major shift in urban voting behavior.

The outcome marks a severe setback for the BJP, which had held this core urban seat in Patna since 1995. Despite deploying senior party stalwarts and extensive campaign machinery, the ruling party failed to hold its most reliable urban voters against Kishor’s relentless grassroots messaging. The loss exposes growing vulnerability within the party’s traditional urban strongholds and forces a critical review of its local organization.

Equally damaging was the outcome for the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), whose candidate plummeted to a distant third with just 14,273 votes. By bypassing the main opposition party, voters demonstrated a clear appetite for a credible alternative beyond Bihar’s long-standing bipolar struggle. Kishor’s breakthrough firmly establishes Jan Suraaj as a powerful force capable of rewriting state politics.
