The senior BJP leader and former Union minister M Venkaiah Naidu was on Saturday elected the new Vice-President of India.
‘I am very humbled. I am also thankful to the Prime Minister and all party leaders for their support. I will seek to utilise the vice-presidential institution to strengthen the hands of the president and secondly uphold the dignity of the Upper House,’ Naidu said after his emphatic victory.
Venkaiah Naidu tweeted after winning the vice presidential election. ‘I promise touphold the Constitution and the high standards set by my esteemed predecessors.’
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah visited Naidu at his residence to on Saturday and congratulated Venkaiah Naidu on being elected as the vice-president and expressed confidence that he will serve the nation with dedication and diligence, committed to the goal of nation-building.
Elated over the victory of NDA candidate in Vice Presidential Election 2017, Narendra Modi on Saturday posted a series of tweets to congratulate Venkaiah Naidu.
Narendra Modi tweeted, wishing Naidu a ‘fruitful and motivating tenure’ and saying he was confident Naidu would ‘serve the nation as a diligent and dedicated vice-president, committed to the goal of nation building’.
‘My mind is filled with memories of working with M Venkaiah Naidu Garu, in the party and government. Will cherish this aspect of our association’, Modi added.
Party sources said there were differences within the BJP parliamentary board on sparing Naidu for the Vice-President’s post since he has been the most vocal among all party leaders in effectively countering the opposition parties. But the Prime Minister Narendra Modi felt that Naidu will be the ideal choice to preside over the Rajya Sabha in the present scenario, according to the sources.
Narendra Modi described Venkaiah Naidu as a farmer’s son who brings years of experience in public life and is admired across the political spectrum.
When the BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu was chosen as the ruling NDA’s candidate for office of vice president, Modi has always admired the hard work and tenacity of Naidu.

Naidu assured that he would be bipartisan on Saturday, before the results came out. ‘There is no my party or your party. Now I am a non-party man. A majority of political parties in India have supported my candidature,’ he said.
Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu is an Indian politician, who served, as the Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation and Information and Broadcasting in the Narendra Modi ministry.
A prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, he has also served as its national president from 2002 to 2004. Earlier, he was the Union Cabinet Minister for Rural Development in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. Naidu, who has always been at the forefront of all issues BJP raised, brings with him a great experience and a political career full of achievements.
His oratory skills and political activism propelled his political career and Naidu was first elected as an MLA to the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly twice from Udayagiri constituency in Nellore district in 1978. He again served as an MLA in 1983.
He acquired a degree in law from the Andhra University, he was made the President of the ABVP union of all colleges under Andhra University. His initial fame is accredited to his involvement in the Jai Andhra Movement in 1972.
Naidu won accolades for aggressively pushing for reforms in Rural development and for the many schemes introduced during this period such as the ‘Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana.’
Naidu defeated Opposition candidate Gopal krishna Gandhi, while he received 516 votes, Gandhi got 244 votes, said election officer Shemsher K Sharif. Naidu got 67 percent of the total votes in an election that witnessed over 98 per cent polling.
The vice-presidential election is conducted through a secret ballot where the members of Electoral College consisting of Parliamentarians vote. The MPs will use special pens for marking their choice. Votes that are marked with any other pen are liable to be rejected. The ballot paper shall contain the names of the contesting candidates, but does not contain any election symbol.

The former president of India Pranab Mukherjee tweets congratulatory message to Naidu. “Many congratulations M Venkaiah Naidu on your election as India’s Vice President. Goodluck & Godbless,” he tweeted.
Addressing MPs of the NDA and other parties backing the ruling bloc’s vice-presidential candidate Venkaiah Naidu a day ago, Prime Minister Modi noted that top posts like those of President and Vice-President will be held for the next five years by people from a identical ideology, a reference to their BJP background. “This is the first time that such an opportunity has arisen since Independence. Miraculous changes had taken place in the country during 1942-47,” Modi said, adding he saw 2017-22 in a similar way. Modi added that they should not think that “Venkaiah to apna hai”.
Celebrations begin at vice president-elect Venkaiah Naidu’s native village Chavatapalem in Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore district. Venkaiah Naidu, will be administered the oath of office by President Ram Nath Kovind at a function at Rashtrapati Bhavan on August 11.
