Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh Chief Mohan Bhagwat on Friday asserted that only a temple and no other structure will be constructed at the disputed site in Ayodhya. He made this statement while addressing Dharm Sansad- a congregation of 2000 hindu saints, mutt heads and VHP leaders across the nation, held in the temple town of Udupi.
The Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri masjid issue is pending in the courts for the past 11 years and Mohan Bhagwat’s announcement comes ahead of the apex court’s final hearing on the issue set to begin from December 5th.
He maintained that when it comes to our faith no ambiguity can be maintained on the issue, it’s a declaration that has been pending for many years.
“Only Ram Mandir will be constructed and nothing else. It will be constructed there only” (at the site that is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ram), Bhagwat said.
25 years ago a revolution was started by the Bharatiya Janata Party after the Babri masjid was demolished on December 6th, sparking a nationwide controversy leading to communal riots in various parts of the country.
The Supreme Court’s final hearing is much awaited as it begins to hear a clutch of petitions pending against the 2010 verdict of the Allahabad High Court, splitting a 2.77 acres of land between the Sunni Waqf board, Nimrohi Akhara and the prime deity ‘Ram lalla’.
Supporting the RSS Chief’s views BJP leader Subramanium Swamy also filed an interlocutory application to enforce his right to worship in Ayodhya, but the Court said it will hear such applications following the main issue related to Babri masjid issue.
However a section of the Muslim organizations have come out blatantly against Bhagwat’s proposal and termed it as an open “challenge” to the constitution of India.
Member of All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) executive committee Asaduddin Owaisi said: “This is obnoxious, a deliberate ploy to vitiate the atmosphere. How can such a statement be made when the matter is in the Supreme Court? This is a title suit and the RSS is saying it is a matter of faith. I hope the SC takes note of it. This is dangerous.”
Adding a new angle to the Ayodhya controversy was yet another twist by the Art of Living Guru Sri Sri Ravishankar who earlier this month met some of the stake holders in the case to reach an out of court settlement in the case.
In reaction to Sri Ravishankar’s stand, the RSS chief made it very clear that any decision on this issue will be taken only by the priests involved in the case and he’ll vouch for that.
However putting his staunch Hindu sentiments above anything else Mohan Bhagwat maintained that, the building of Ram temple after years of sacrifice seems far no more. He said that the Ram temple would be constructed with the “same stones” and restored to its lost fervour. Bhagwat’s statement bears importance in wake of the forthcoming Gujarat elections next month and the host of other states like Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya and Rajasthan which go to polls next year.
The BJP has been constantly harping on the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya ever since it came to power in 2014 Lok Sabha elections and also post its landslide victory in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections with Yogi Adityanath assuming the CM’s office.
