Single use plastic banned in the country from today

The ban on single-use plastic i.e. single-use plastic has come into effect from today. There will be a ban on the production, import, storage, distribution, sale and use of single-use plastic items across the country from today.

According to the Government of India, 30.59 lakh tonnes of single use plastic waste was generated in the country in 2018-19 and more than 34 lakh tonnes in 2019-20. Items made of single-use plastic are not decomposed and cannot be burned. This releases harmful gas from the toxic fumes. Apart from recycling, storage is the only solution.

The items that have been included in the purview of the ban include plastic ear-buds, candy sticks, ice cream sticks, polystyrene ie thermocol, plastic plates, plastic cups and other plastic utensils.
