Sonam Wangchuk released: Central government immediately revokes NSA detention, appeals for peace in Ladakh

The central government has decided to revoke the detention of renowned environmental activist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA) with immediate effect. The government said it is committed to creating an environment of peace, stability and mutual trust in Ladakh so that constructive and meaningful dialogue can proceed with all stakeholders.

According to the government, Wangchuk was detained under the NSA on September 26, 2025, on the orders of the District Magistrate in view of the serious law and order situation in Leh on September 24, 2025. He had already served nearly half of the detention period prescribed under the Act.

The government stated that active dialogue is ongoing with various stakeholders and civil society leaders in Ladakh. However, it also noted that the atmosphere of shutdowns and protests has negatively impacted students, youth, businesses, tourism, and the region’s economy.

The Government reiterated its commitment to provide all necessary measures for the security of Ladakh and expressed hope that issues in the region would be resolved through dialogue through the High Powered Committee and other appropriate forums.
