According to the Election Commission, following the example of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh will also begin a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign of the voter list in October. The primary objective of this important campaign is to ensure maximum transparency and accuracy in the voter list. The Election Commission is expected to issue an official notification in this regard soon.
A senior Election Commission official said, “The SIR campaign aims to achieve 100% accuracy in the voter list and increase transparency. Specific document lists are being prepared for the northeastern states. The campaign will be delivered to every household through Booth Level Officers (BLOs), which will involve filling out the necessary forms and verifying voter details.”
It is noteworthy that approximately 70% of voters under this campaign will not be required to present any documents. Booth-level officers will visit homes with pre-filled forms, which voters will simply need to sign, simplifying the process. However, the remaining 30% of voters will be required to present prescribed documents to verify their identity.
The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is essentially a comprehensive update of the electoral rolls. In the context of Uttar Pradesh, the 2003 electoral rolls will be reconciled with the current list. This process will remove duplicate registrations and add the names of eligible citizens.
It’s worth noting that a similar campaign in Bihar verified the details of millions of voters, uncovering and resolving numerous errors in the electoral rolls. Now, this important process will be implemented in the vast state of Uttar Pradesh, which is expected to enhance the quality of the electoral process.
