PUNE: On the auspicious occasion of the holy month of Shravan, thousands of devotees are gathering at the sacred Bhimashankar Temple, nestled in the Sahyadri hills of Maharashtra’s Pune district. Situated at the source of the Bhima River, this revered shrine is celebrated not only for its natural splendor but also for its unique worship of Lord Shiva in his Ardhanarishvara form. Pilgrims consider performing ritual water offerings and taking darshan here during Shravan to be of immense spiritual merit.
The defining feature of the Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is its self-manifested (Swayambhu) Shivling, which appears naturally divided into two halves. One part represents Lord Shiva while the other symbolizes Goddess Parvati, signifying the unified worship of divine masculine and feminine energies. According to sacred traditions, Lord Shiva manifested at this location to liberate the world from the demon Bhima, and the sweat from his divine battle formed the holy Bhima River.
Special prayers, ornate decorations, and Rudrabhishekam rituals are being conducted daily throughout the month. Devotees and Kanwariyas from across the country carry holy river water to perform ablutions at the shrine. Local authorities and temple management have deployed comprehensive queue management, security, and medical arrangements to accommodate the steady influx of pilgrims.
