The team of Women’s Commission will conduct an investigation tour in Malda-Murshidabad of West Bengal

The National Commission for Women has taken cognizance of the violence that took place in Murshidabad, West Bengal during the protest against the Waqf Act. Commission member Dr. Archana Majumdar informed on Thursday that a delegation of the Commission will reach Malda on April 18.

The delegation, led by Commission Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, will visit the violence-affected areas in Malda and Murshidabad. The team will reach Malda at 2:30 pm and meet the victims and assess their condition. The primary goal of the Commission is to ensure the reintegration of the affected women into the mainstream of society.

Dr. Majumdar said that during the violence, cases of atrocities and harassment against women have come to light in Murshidabad and Malda, which are being taken seriously. The delegation will hold meetings with the district officials, Superintendent of Police and District Magistrate and will prepare a detailed report based on its investigation, which will be sent to both the Central and State Governments.

Referring to his experiences, Dr Majumdar said that incidents of violence have increased in West Bengal in the last decade. Since his appointment to the commission, he has witnessed five major violent incidents in the state. He described the current situation as a result of the failure of the police system.

The Commission has assured the victims that the culprits will be brought to justice. Dr. Majumdar clarified that the Women’s Commission will stand with the victimized women until they get justice.
