Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented in Uttarakhand from today

The state of Uttarakhand has implemented the Uniform Civil Code, popularly known as UCC, from Monday. With this move, Uttarakhand has become the first state in the Republic of India to adopt this Act. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami clarified in this regard that all the administrative preparations required to implement the Act, including approval of regulations and training of personnel, have been completed.

The main objective of the UCC is to provide equal rights to all citizens. Through this Act, uniformity has been established in all relevant laws to eliminate any kind of discrimination on the basis of caste, religion and gender, the Chief Minister said.

In recent times, the state cabinet had approved the rules and regulations required to fully implement this law. This decision came as a major commitment of the Bharatiya Janata Party during the 2022 assembly elections.

After the implementation of this Act, equal rules and rights will be ensured for all citizens of the state, except the Scheduled Tribes, in matters related to marriage, divorce, inheritance and property rights. Registration has been made compulsory for all marriages and live-in-relationships, thereby taking an important step towards equality and justice.
