VK Sasikala quits politics ahead of Tamil Nadu polls

A big announcement that shook the political scenario in Tamil Nadu, barely a few days before the assembly elections is that AIADMK chief VK Sasikala declared that he would ‘stay away from politics and public life’.

The announcement came as big disappointment for her supporters. In a tweet, former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s close assistant, Sasikala, appealed to the AIADMK “true supporters” to function together and to keep the late CM’s “common enemy,” the DMK, from taking power.

The ousted leader who was supposed to have a crucial role in future state elections urged “true followers of Amma” to campaign like siblings for “golden rule” of the late Jayalalithaa.

Sasikala said last week that the governing party of Tamil Nadu and AMMK — the party of her nephew TV Dhinakaran — should contest elections for the Assembly together.

On 6 April, elections will be held in a single phase of the 234-member Assembly at Tamil Nadu.

Dhinakaran said in response to her decision that he attempted to persuade her to reconsider her decision and will continue to try.

I’m saddened by her decision. I tried my best to persuade her out of the decision. I will keep trying. It’s not a setback for me. AMMK will continue contesting this election under my leadership,” he said.

Meanwhile, BJP President L Murugan welcomed this big decision by Sasikala and said that many people were dragging her into politics to fulfil their own dreams at the same time they were disrupting peace in the State. those who dreamed of seizing power in Tamil Nadu by causing chaos.

The 66-year-old returned to Tamil Nadu last month days after serving a four-year jail term in Bengaluru following conviction in a corruption case. She was lodged in prison since February 2017 after being convicted in Rs 66 crore disproportionate assets case.

After the demise of Jayalalitha, Sasikala had been inducted as secretary-general of AIADMK
