Jumping into the NRC debate, BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP from West Bengal, Rupa Ganguly seems to have struck the wrong note; Ganguly has now put herself into a controversy that she could have well avoided.
Rupa on Wednesday asserted that after the partition in 1947, West Bengal became a part of India as it was for only the Hindus.
The BJP Member of Parliament from West Bengal reiterated that the partition was done so that Pakistan becomes a Muslim nation, and Bangladesh was mainly for the Muslims. She added that West Bengal was for the Hindus who returned from Bangladesh, ANI reported.
The statement was a reply to a question on what were Ganguly’s views were on the ‘Citizenship Bill’—that Hindus are refugees and Muslims are infiltrators. The MP went on and added that West Bengal was for the Hindus who returned from Bangladesh. She also stated that other religions like the Buddhist and Jains are refugees too, who came from different parts of the World and settled in India.
The BJP’s MP, however, assured, “Those who are born in India or are living since childhood, including Muslims, need not worry about National Register of Citizens (NRC).”
A news agency also reported that she actually said, when asked about Citizenship Bill and Hindus are refugee and Muslims are infiltrators, “Partition was done so Pakistan becomes Muslim nation; Bangladesh mainly for Muslims, Bengal part of India as it was for Hindus who returned from Bangladesh.”
These comments came just after some days when the BJP national vice-president OM Mathur said that the country would not be allowed to become a dharamsala, and that NRC will be implemented throughout the country after the 2019 general elections.
After releasing the final draft of NRC at Assam, the BJP State president of West Bengal unit had said that NRC will also be implemented in the state to filter the original citizens of the state.
