She is sick, and her son is now the commander of Congress. For these reasons, she, off-late is rarely seen in the front row against the anti-BJP movement. With son Rahul Gandhi being busy in Chhattisgarh, mother Sonia has been compelled to take the baton to lead the other opposition parties in attacking the BJP.
Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi recently led the opposition’s protest against the Rafale deal on Parliament premises. She was joined by top leadership of the Congress party as well as other Opposition leaders with the demand that there should be a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to probe the issue.
Following the protests, Rajya Sabha was also adjourned till 2.30pm on Friday. But the BJP is saying that it is a complete eye wash. Her husband and deceased Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi were once attacked by Bofors scam. Her name and native country’s businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi were also included in the scam as an accused. Some of Sonia Gandhi’s family member was also included into the scam, so the political pundits feel this attack on BJP over the Rafale deal is nothing more than an attempt of the Congress to divert people’s attention.
It is nothing but crocodile tears, alleged a BJP leader. But some sources of Congress opined madam Gandhi’s inclusion in the protest as an extra amount of oxygen in the opposition camp. The credibility she has on other parties do not exist for Rahul. So the united opposition could now get better passage to attack Modi-led NDA government, further added the source.
On Friday wearing a black armband, Sonia Gandhi joined other Congress leaders in raising slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government below the Gandhi statue at the Parliament. Her party leaders carried placards with slogans which read ‘We demand JPC’. Sonia Gandhi was present in Lok Sabha soon after the protest.
Congress MP from Rajya Sabha Gulam Nabi Azad said, “This is the biggest scam of the World. We have support of all opposition parties that a JPC should probe the Rafale deal. We will raise it parliament today (read Friday), and have issued notices for the same.”
For these protest, the tabling of Triple Talaq bill was rescheduled to the next Parliament session.
The Congress on the day also turned down a breakfast invitation from the Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu.
