Q. Tell us something about Swami Chinmayananda Saraswati’s personality and his life course.
Ans: His life sketch is very beautiful and admirable. We have even made a movie which delivers the idea about his life. He was greatly involved in the independence movements and also went to jail for several freedom movements.
Swami Chinmayananda Saraswati was a journalist and studied in various parts of the country. He wanted to write on spirituality and Indian Swamis who were known as spiritual gurus. He went to Haridwar and met Swami Shivanandji. He lived there for 3 days and was deeply touched by the words and lifestyle of Swami Shivanandji.
He extended his stay and got so influenced by it that, he wanted to take Sanyas. He was given the name, Swami Chinmayananda Saraswati after that.
Swami Chinmayananda wanted to study Vedanta very deeply. So he approached Swami Shivananadji to teach him Vedanta. Since Swami Shivanandji was a doctor, he got little time. So, he promised to him that, he will get him a suitable teacher. Afterward, Swami Chinmayananda studied Vedanta from Swami Tapovan Maharaj.
Post this, Swami Chinmayananda wanted to spread his knowledge across the country, so he started with Pune. For 47 years, he delivered this divine knowledge to many people. His knowledge can be watched and heard through various videos, audios, and books. His commentary on Bhagwat Geeta is delivering a very precise and clean relevance of Bhagwat Geeta with the real life.
For Chinmay Mission students, he is an inspiration.
Q. Chinmaya Mission follows Gurukul structure. Why is it so important?
Ans. Guru Parampara is important because knowledge without experience is mere information. So, the person who teaches that knowledge has experienced it. He is wise Guru who delivers an experience to the students. The company of that person is beautiful. Only, he can explain the beauty of that knowledge. Apart from that, “conditioning” is very important.
All gurukulas are named as, Sandeepandy Sadhanalaya. These gurukul centers provide a free living, free food to people who want to seek the truth. The environment is capable of providing good conditioning. It is like learning under the great guidance of a guru.
Q. How is Chinamy Mission taking forward the Seva aspect of Swami Chinmayananda?
Ans: Chinmay Mission believes that young generation needs to have more clarity about the texts of Vedanta. That is why we run 104 schools under Chinmaya Mission.
There is a very good residential school in Coimbatore, and also 3 management schools. For other schools, we conduct workshops and impart the divine knowledge in a holistic approach. Chinmay Organization for Rural Development (CORD) runs in various states which work on the grass-roots level. One of the workers is the receiver of Padma Shri Award. This is how we strive to conduct great work in social areas.
Q. What was Swami Chinmayananda’s favorite food?
Ans: Swami traveled across the globe to impart the divine knowledge. He was more focused in his actions than anything else. His lectures were full of wits and jovial facts. If we talk about his choice in food, he relished “Rasam and Papadam” the most.
Q. He was amidst the founder members of VHP (Vishwa Hindu Parishad). Do Chinmay Mission support BJP in the upcoming elections?
Ans. He was amidst the founder members of VHP, but after that, he did not get involved in any of the political activities. He gave free hand to them.
Q. PM Modi even visited Chimney Mission and supports its approach. How does Chinmay Mission feel about PM Modi’s approach?
Ans: PM Modi is conducting a great job and his projects are really helping poorer sections. His reach to the grass-root level is commendable.
On the other hand, we do not have any political connections. Also, we do not support any party in elections. But, I can say that PM Modi is doing good work and I pray for his good health and success.
