Proud moment for Indian Railways, as it gets its first ever aerodynamically designed 200 kilometer per hour (kmph) engine. Indian Railways has some good news for their passengers. They will soon reach their destination much sooner than they used to if all things go well with its newest engine.
It is the first aerodynamically designed passenger electric engine for Indian Railways that is capable of running at 200 kmph which is revealed at an event in Delhi. It was introduced in service in Northern Railway and will slash the travel time for various premium trains that it will pull.
The first aerodynamically designed three-phase electric locomotive has been built by the Chittaranjan Locomotive Works.
The three-phase WAP-5 passenger electric locomotive comes with improved aerodynamics and has an ergonomic design, which also takes care of the driver`s comfort and safety. The electric locomotives will be used to pull premium trains like Rajdhani Express, Gatiman Express, and Shatabdi Express. What makes this passenger electric locomotive special is the front design of it, which is more aerodynamic and reduces drag at higher speeds. And the revamped suspension system would ensure that there are no undue vibrations due to air drag and the train is dynamically stable even at speeds of 200 kmph.
This electric locomotive packs cameras with microphones at the critical positions inside and outside the locomotive to record the voice and audio signals. It has also been provided with Crew Voice and Video Recording System (CVVRS) for on-board driving data recording and analysis. The WAP-5 variant, with 5,400 HP of power, is energy efficient and stable for high speed operations.
