India is planning on a big move towards building a well-contemplated railway link between Raxaul (Bihar) to Kathmandu (Nepal). The main motive is to augment people-to-people connections along with a big movement of goods.
The official announcement was made on Saturday following the delegation talks amidst Indian and Nepalese executers. The talk-meet was chaired by PM Narendra Modi along with this Nepalese counterpart K P Sharma Oli. Mr. Sharma is on a three day visit to India. Both the prime ministers agreed upon building the electrified rail line.
The project will be financed by India and this will connect the border city of India to Nepal.
The main target is to enhance the means of connectivity between two neighboring nations. As they say, “to enhance people-to-people linkages and promote economic growth and development”.
Both the prime ministers completely appreciated the progress in the phase of implementation. The Phase-I of India-Nepal cross-border rail line link project has been taken care of.
Both the leaders have noted that, the distance between the rail lines connecting Jayanagar to Janakpur/Kurtha will be finished by 2018. Also, another line from Jogbani to Biratnagar Custom Yard will be finished by the end of 2018. After this, other fragments including Jayanagar-Bijalpura-Bardibas and Jogbani-Biratnagar will also be taken forward on a priority basis.
Nepal has committed to get over with the issues like land availability on a quick basis. India expressed great gratitude towards Nepal for this initiation on rail link project.
A Strategy to Beat China:
In March 2016, China had agreed to build a strategic rail link between Nepal via Tibet. This was precisely decided to lower the Kathmandu’s reliance and dependence of India. After two years, India too the expedite steps to link Raxaul to Kathmandu to gain the better significance.
Recently, two countries have signed a transit treaty upon building highways by 2020.
This agreement was caused by a mistrust when in 2015-2016, Nepal has blamed India for 135-days long blocking. This had actually disabled Nepal economy in many ways. This is the first step towards railway connectivity between two nations. Also, both the sides agreed that, they will conduct the preparatory survey within one year.
On the basis of the details of this project, the final implementation and the functioning model will be prepared.
Oli mentioned and assured that, “Nepal will extend full cooperation for early completion of the requisite surveys for the new rail line”.
Some other rail projects which are running in the pipeline are – New Jalpaiguri to Kakarbhitta, Nautanwa to Bhairahawa and Nepalgunj Road to Nepalgunj.
Other salient benefits which will sprout out of this agreement:
- PM Modi and Oli also considered the untapped potential of inland waterways between both the nations. This will contribute in the overall development of the Himalayan region.
- Not to mention, the easy movements of cargos will influence the business growth of both the countries.
- This is the symbol of tie-boosting between both the countries, as India agreed upon initiating the organic farming and soil health monitoring in Nepal. This will enrich the agriculture sector with the help of Nepal, who is already self-sufficient and rich in natural resources and agriculture.
