The 69th head of the Kanchi mutt Shankaracharya Jayandra Saraswati achieved his samadhi in Tamil Nadu’s Kanchipuram, he was 82 years old. He was admitted to ABCD hospital this morning following some breathing complaints. According to sources in the mutt he was not keeping well for quite some time and passed away due to cardiac arrest.
He was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state and his vital parameters like blood pressure, heart, beat and pulse began to drop and finally breathed his last.
The Acharya made frequent visits to the hospitals due to his illness in the recent past. In January he was admitted to Ramchandra hospital in Porur when he complained of breathlessness and his urea levels shot up but he denied any treatment.
Born Sri Subramaniam Swamy on the 18th of July 1935, in Irulneeki village of Thiruvarur district, Jayendra Saraswati was appointed the 69th pontiff of the mutt in the year 1954 when he was just 19. he was bestowed with the title of Sri Jayendra Saraswati On March 22nd 1954 by his guru, Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati Swamigal.
The last rites (brindavan pravesha karyakram) of the guru will be performed as per vedic customs at 8 pm on Thursday. His Samadhi will be placed closed to his predecessor Chandrasekarendra Saraswati.
Kanchi Shankaracharya courted lot of controversy when he was arrested along with his successor Vijayendra Saraswati in connection with the Sankararaman murder case back in 2004.
Sankararaman was the manager of the Varadaraja Perumal temple found murdered in the Kanchi temple premises in September 2003. However, Shankaracharya was acquitted by the Puducherry court in 2013.
Some of the senior BJP and RSS leaders and even West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to Twitter to pay their tributes to Shri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Deeply anguished by the passing away of Acharya of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam Jagadguru Pujyashri Jayendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya. He will live on in the hearts and minds of lakhs of devotees due to his exemplary service and noblest thoughts. Om Shanti to the departed soul.”
“Deeply saddened by the demise of Jayendra Saraswati ji, the Shankaracharya of the Kanchipuram Kamakoti Peetam math. With his demise we have lost a great saint of present times, who has been a guiding force for the millions. My prayers for the liberated soul, ” tweeted Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted, “Saddened at the Mahasamadhi of Kanchi Acharya Pujya Jayendra Saraswati ji.”
Shankaracharya will be succeeded by his junior Vijayendra Saraswati as the head pontiff.
The Samadhi (body) of the late guru is kept at Kamakoti Peetam for his devotees to pay respects who hailed him as “Jagatguru.”
