In what looks like a desperate move and an attempt to keep her bastion fortified the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her first visit to the Jangalmahal region on Thursday reiterated that her party the Trinamool Congress (TMC) was believer of the concept ‘Maa, Mati and Manush’ (Mother, land and people).
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was trying to counter the inroads, in the tribal populated and dominated region of the state, made by the Amit Shah-led Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) for the first time ever in the history of Bengal’s political arena.
The BJP, over the past one year, since the visit of Prime Minister Modi and its president Amit Shah, has increased its presence in the tribal populated area of West Bengal considerably. According to sources the BJP has enrolled around 1,30,000 members, and has also established about 140 party offices in the Jangalmahal region, where it had made a significant presence felt in the Panchayat polls that was held in May.
Chief Minister Banerjee addressing a gathering in Jhargram on the occasion of World Tribal Day, attacking the Shah-led BJP opined that the saffron brigade believed in divisive politics and her administration was working for the people of the region.
The Chief Minister, in her appeal to the people of the region, said, “Jangalmahal Amar Khub Priyo… Eta Amake Haratey Debenna, (I love Jangalmahal, and I don’t want to lose it. BJP is doing divisive politics by misleading the tribal people. Don’t believe them. If you have to believe someone –then trust Trinamool Congress (TMC) and no one else,”
Furthermore, Mamata Banerjee left no stone unturned in taking the credit of making the region free of Maoists. She also advised the local people that they should be alert and not allow anybody to inject the divide and rule policy into the community. The Chief Minister also told the gathering to inform the police if they found anyone indulging in such activities. Banerjee stopped short from labelling the BJP as friends of Maoists.
The Chief Minister, hinting at BJP without naming the party, also said, “Jangalmahal is now free from Maoists. Touchwood it’s peaceful now. Some people are trying to bring Maoists from Jharkhand to create tension and disturbance among tribal groups.”
Chief Minister Banerjee further added, “Please stay alert and don’t allow them to enter your territory. They only know bloodbath and nothing else.”
Political pundits were of the opinion that the move by Mamata Banerjee is aimed at keeping the BJP at bay and taking matters of the region in her own hands, as she looks certain that the BJP is at an advantage after the good show in the recent panchayat polls.
