For the first time in Independent India, the people of West Bengal’s Midnapur district saw an Indian Prime Minister hold a Mega Kissan Rally to address their woes.
At the rally, Prime Minister Modi slammed the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal, accusing the chief minister of running a ‘murder your opponents’ syndicate and ignoring the youth, the poor, and the farmers of the state.
The Prime Minister said, “I can see the state of the Trinamool Government. We all know how it is. There is no benefit for farmer, development for poor or jobs for the youth. This has become the new identity of the state.”
Reaching out to the farmers, PM Modi added, in Bengali, ‘’Amar sarkar apnader sarkar, amader vikash, apnader vikash,” (Our government is your government; our development is your development).
The Prime Minister also took a dig at the law and order situation in the state. PM Modi said that the real face of ‘Ma-Mati-manush’ is for everyone to see.
The Prime Minister further added that the syndicate raj was running West Bengal. He said, “Nothing happens in the state without the due approval of the syndicate.” He observed that even doing puja needed the permission of the Trinamool Congress (TMC)-run syndicate.
Source reflected that the Prime Minister had said this in an apparent reference to the Durga Puja idol immersion row in 2017.
Speaking on the NDA government’s commitment to the farmers PM Modi said, “Our government took a decision, which will bring a positive difference in farmers’ lives. Previous governments when asked to increase the MSP put away those files.”
He also opined that farmers’ kept agitating, but neither the state government nor the Centre heard them.
Divulging into statistics PM Modi said, ‘But after the BJP came to power, we raised the MSP 1.5 times the cost of producing it.’’
Further slamming the TMC-led syndicate the Prime Minister said that this syndicate is taking away benefits from farmers, killing people who protest, and exploiting the poor.
PM Modi stressed, “Even getting admission in a college cannot be done without the permission of the syndicate.”
Prime Minister Modi’s rally at Midnapur, however, witnessed a horrific incident, when a part of the canopy collapsed and 90 BJP supporters’ were injured.
This led to a major political tussle between Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress, and the BJP, with each accusing the other for the mishap.
Sources said that at least 90 people injured after this makeshift tent collapsed. The Prime Minister visited the injured in the hospital.
PM Modi just before his rally was asking the supporters, who were crowding the tent, to be careful.
According to reports, PM Modi was seen crying while meeting one of the injured.
BJP’s Amit Malvya later tweeted that one of the injured asked for the Prime Minister’s autograph and PM Modi obliged.
According to officials, the PM saw the tent collapsing while he was in the middle of his address. He immediately instructed the SPG personnel standing next to him to look after the people and attend the injured.
After the PM’s instruction, local BJP leaders’ including PM Modi’s security personnel along with local police swung into a rescue operation and admitted the injured at the nearest hospital.
Following the Prime Minister’s visit to Midnapur, which is also considered one of the largest districts of West Bengal, political pundits were of the opinion that PM Modi’s Midnapur visit is not a gimmick, they viewed that it is completely a calculative step taken to do better in the ensuing general elections of 2019.
They also observed that this is why this rally was termed a Kissan Rally.
A decade ago, the land acquisition movement, in Bengal became a major political tool of Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress party, which helped Didi become the Chief Minister, and the political analysts feel that PM Modi and BJP party chief Amit Shah was now using the same tool to defeat the TMC.
