The oil war between US-Iran took a new turn when India showed less interest over Washington’s proposal.
The US wants all countries to cut oil imports to zero by early November from Iran.
But at Delhi’s Jawahar Lal Nehru Bhawan where the 2+2 dialogue was held between India-US, New Delhi stated their stands regarding oil imports from Iran.
A sources from External Affairs Ministry revealed that we frankly put our stand in front of US counterparts and asserted that India is an energy reliant country. So rapid reduction of oil imports from Iran will impact our economy. We made it clear that our economy should not be impacted by your policies.
And another source from External Affairs Ministry revealed that US said, “We understand your (Read India) values. It is completely our policy but it is not in our interest to damage your economy.”
On this basis US secretary for State Mike Pompeo remarked that we have told Indians consistently as we have told every nation that on November 4 the sanction with respect to Iranian crude oil will be enforced and that we will consider waiver where appropriate. But that is our expectation that the purchases of Iranian crude oil will go to zero from every country, or sanction will be imposed. So we will work with the Indians.”
Another discussion on India-Russia defence deal held between Indian Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and her counterpart Mike Mattis. After the meeting Pompei opined, “India is buying a missile defence system from Russia and oil from Iran would be part of the dialogue but not be the primary focus.”
A source from Defence Ministry said that India has already conveyed to US that it is going ahead with the Rs.40,000 crore deal with Russia to procure a batch of S-400 Triumf air defence missile system.
Here are some issues that the two countries has signed:
- Hotline between two countries to help create a bridge over trade and defence information
- Naval liaison and remove maritime dispute in Indian Ocean region
- Intel sharing
- Work together to check Islamic State funding
Another diplomatic news doing the round is when India and US were busy settling their understanding under 2+2 meeting, Iran has decided to hand over Chahbar Port to an Indian company for operation.
It will follow an interim pact said Iranian Roads and Urban development Minister Abbas Akhoundi.
South Block confirmed that this decision is a major diplomatic win for New Delhi. Where China is busy to make economic corridor across Pakistan for smooth accessing to Karachi, if India could start their trade operation in Chahbar then they will go far ahead from Pakistan and China.
